I visited Japan in high school. My host family and I went to a version of Universal Studios in Kyoto. It had a miniture set you could stomp on, like Godzilla, and a ninja/shogun themed section where they shot the period dramas. In this shogun section along the rooftops, were outdoor matte paintings that looked like pagodas, and ancient castles. Though not really matte paintings, in front of the camera, but they're behind the set, I guess film types would give kind of painting this a different name.

They were real enough that the immersed you in the town, and made you feel like you were actually in a valley of ancient buildings. I found it neat that you could pull off this same effect by painting up pieces of plywood and sticking it on the rooftops of the outdoor set.

Thanks Fabian, glad you enjoyed it! At work, whenever I have the opportunity to look at matte paintings I do, and I'm only now getting to the point where I'm starting to think that I understand what I'm seeing.

Matte paintings are captivating things, whether it is old London or a Sci-Fi Cityscape there is nothing as gripping as a masterful painting complimenting acting for setting the mood. I'd love to get into this art one day, need to harvest some reference material so I can build up a library.. your own photographic sources and understanding of photography and using your drawing and editing abilities are all crucial for creating effective mattes.

Nice little write up.. almost poetic ;)
